FlashCall Detection and Monetization
Flash calls carry verification traffic on your voice network without paying A2P rates. We help mobile operators detect them, decide which to allow, and bill the ones they allow.
What is FlashCall monetization?
FlashCall monetization is the process by which a mobile operator detects flash calls (very short, unanswered calls used to verify phone numbers) arriving on its voice interconnects, then routes legitimate verification traffic through a dedicated trunk that is billed per call attempt. Unauthorised flash calls on other trunks are blocked or redirected, so verification traffic either pays a fair rate or returns to A2P SMS.
Why flash calls bypass A2P revenue
Enterprises and apps adopted FlashCall because it is cheap: a call that is released before it is answered usually generates no termination charge, while an OTP by SMS pays an A2P termination rate. For the receiving operator, the verification traffic is still using its network, but now on voice trunks priced for ordinary calls. The more verification moves to flash calls, the more A2P SMS revenue falls.
How detection works
- Observe voice interconnects. Call attempts on international and national voice trunks are analysed from signaling and CDR data.
- Find the pattern. Flash calls show as very short call attempts released before answer, in volume, from calling numbers that rotate within the ranges used to carry codes.
- Separate them from normal traffic. Ordinary missed and short calls from subscribers are excluded.
- Attribute them. Each flash-call flow is traced to the interconnect partner and calling number ranges it arrives from.
Block, redirect or bill
| Action | When it fits | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bill | The provider agrees to send flash calls on a dedicated trunk | Each attempt is charged at an agreed rate |
| Redirect | The operator prefers verification by SMS | Flash calls are rejected, so apps fall back to SMS OTP |
| Block | Traffic arrives through bypass or unknown sources | Calls are stopped and reported |
Dedicated FlashCall termination trunk
Monetization works like A2P SMS monetization: FlashCall providers are offered a dedicated trunk with an agreed per-attempt rate, and flash calls on any other trunk are blocked or redirected. Providers get a reliable, legitimate path; the operator gets paid for the traffic it carries.
Reporting
Volumes of detected flash calls by partner and calling range, actions taken, and revenue on the dedicated trunk. The same data feeds revenue assurance audits.
The other side: sending FlashCall
We also deliver FlashCall verification for apps and CPaaS platforms, on sanctioned routes. See FlashCall authentication. Working on both sides helps us design detection that separates legitimate verification from abuse.
Frequently asked questions
Are flash calls fraud?
Not in themselves. FlashCall is a legitimate verification method used by apps and CPaaS platforms. The issue for operators is commercial: a missed call is usually not billed on termination, so verification traffic uses the network without paying an A2P rate. Some flash-call traffic does arrive through bypass routes, and that part can be treated as fraud.
How are flash calls detected?
By their pattern on voice trunks: call attempts released before answer, often within a second or two, in large volumes, from calling numbers that rotate within ranges used to carry codes. Detection works on signaling and CDR data and separates them from ordinary short or missed calls.
What happens to legitimate flash calls?
They can be allowed on a dedicated FlashCall termination trunk and billed per attempt under an agreement with the provider, the same principle as A2P SMS monetization.
Will blocking flash calls affect our subscribers?
Blocking can stop users receiving verification calls from apps they use. That is why detection comes first, followed by a choice per source: bill on an agreed trunk, redirect to SMS, or block.
